One of the things we love most about welcoming guests to Fenns Farm is hearing about the places they’ve discovered during their stay. The Peak District is full of beautiful landscapes, historic houses, and charming villages — and many of them are just a short drive away.
If you’re planning a Peak District cottage holiday, here are ten wonderful places we always recommend exploring while you’re here.

1. Chatsworth House and Gardens
Often described as the jewel of the Peak District, Chatsworth is a truly special day out. With grand interiors, sweeping parkland, riverside walks, and seasonal events throughout the year, it’s a place guests return to again and again - plus it has a fantastic adventure playground and farm for kids of all ages to enjoy.

2. Mam Tor and the Great Ridge
For unforgettable views, Mam Tor is hard to beat. The walk along the Great Ridge is one of the most iconic in the Peak District, offering wide open skies and rolling hills in every direction — especially beautiful at sunrise or sunset.
3. Bakewell and the River Wye
Bakewell is famous for its historic charm, independent shops, and of course the traditional Bakewell pudding. A gentle stroll beside the River Wye followed by tea in a local café makes for a perfectly relaxed afternoon.
4. Monsal Trail
Ideal for walkers and cyclists of all abilities, the Monsal Trail follows a former railway line through tunnels, across the stunning Monsall viaduct, and alongside peaceful countryside. It’s one of the easiest ways to enjoy the scenery at a slower pace.
5. Castleton and the Blue John Caverns
Nestled beneath dramatic hills, Castleton is a picturesque village known for its fascinating underground caverns and rich local history. Exploring the caves is always a memorable experience, particularly when it's too wet to be out on the hills!

6. Dovedale and the Stepping Stones
Dovedale is one of the Peak District’s most loved beauty spots. The famous stepping stones, limestone valleys, and gentle riverside paths make it perfect for families, photographers, and relaxed countryside walks.
7. Ladybower Reservoir
Surrounded by forested hills and scenic viewpoints, Ladybower is wonderful for peaceful walks, cycling, or simply sitting beside the water with a picnic. The views across the reservoir change beautifully with the seasons.
8. Haddon Hall
Full of atmosphere and history, Haddon Hall feels like stepping back in time. Its medieval rooms, terraced gardens, and riverside setting create a quieter, more intimate experience than many larger stately homes.
9. Tissington Village and Trail
Tissington is one of the prettiest villages in the Peak District, known for its stone cottages and traditional charm. The nearby trail offers a gentle, traffic-free route for walking or cycling through open countryside.
10. Buxton Spa Town
With elegant architecture, beautiful parks, and a relaxed cultural feel, Buxton makes a lovely change of pace from rural walking days. Guests enjoy the gardens, a wide range excellent independent bars, cafés and restaurants, and seasonal events held throughout the year at the world famous Buxton Opera House.
The Perfect Base for Exploring It All
One of the reasons guests choose a self-catering cottage in the Peak District is the freedom to explore at their own pace — setting out for a day of adventure, then returning to peace and comfort in the countryside.
From Fenns Farm, many of these much-loved places are within easy reach, making it simple to experience the very best of the national park while still enjoying a quiet, relaxing stay.
Every visit to the Peak District feels a little different — new views, favourite walks, and places you’ll want to return to. Helping guests discover those moments is one of the most rewarding parts of what we do here at Fenns Farm.
If you’re dreaming of fresh air, beautiful scenery, and a cosy cottage stay, we’d be delighted to welcome you and help you explore this wonderful corner of the country.
